Last February, The European Commission proclaimed a contest” The European Union and children rights”, on the initiative of the Vice-President of the European Commission, Mr Franco Frattini, responsible for safety, freedom and justice portfolio. Adolescents aged between 10 and 18 years old were invited to create a poster about the rights of the children in the European Union.
The contest goal consists of helping children and adolescents to get aware of their rights recognized all over Europe.
Price-giving ceremony is to take place on 9th May 2006, the Europe Day in Rome from 10.00 to 11.00 at CIDE, via IV novembre 149.
Afterwards, the best six first national prize-winner teams will be invited for a final prize-giving ceremony in Bruxelles (18th May 2006).
The best posters will be shown on the Commission web-sites in the Member States www.europa.eu.int, and will be used in the future European campaigns on children rights promotion.
As a matter of fact, the Commission aims at publishing a communication on children rights on June 2006 with the goal of starting a children rights promotion and protection strategy in all domestic and foreign policies.
The strategy is based on international instruments being in force now, such as ONU convention on child rights and European convention on man rights.
Besides that, on the occasion of Europe Day on 9th May, this year the European Commission Representative in Italy proposed the contest “Europe on the blackboard” to higher education institutes of any kind in Italy.
The contest is going to award students making the best Internet websites in the European Union.
In this occasion, from 10.00 o’clock at CIDE in via novembre 149, the Vice-President of the European Commission, Mr Franco Frattini, The Vice-President of the European Parliament, Mr Mario Mauro, and The Director of the Italian Representative of the European Commission, Mr Pier Virgilio Dastoli, will receive a delegation for the winner classes and institutions..
Afterwards, students are expected to visit Horaces and Curiatii Hall in Capitol, where the Treaty of Rome and the Treaty Project, adopting a Constitution for Europe, were respectively signed in 1957 and 2004.
At the end, students will be awarded prizes by the Mayor of Rome, Mr Walter Veltroni.
The best two winner classes have been invited to visit Bruxelles, seat of the European institutions, and Vienna, the capital of the country taking charge for the European Union presidency on duty this semester.
