The Conference, promoted by
Gaslini Foundation and by the
Municipality of Genoa, cooperating with
World Bank, the
Arabic Urban Development Institute (AUDI), the Giannina Gaslini Institute and Lynkeus Srl, was held in Genoa from 7th to 9th January 2004.
Ideal follow-up of the “Children and the City” Conference (Amman, Jordan, December 2002), the target of the Conference was to let everybody be aware of the problems of the child with public life and all those who are involved in politics and interventions on behalf of children.
The Conference was the first official event of hte year when Genoa was appointed to be the "European Capital of the Culture" (making 2004 – as the Mayor, Mr Giuseppe Pericu, said – a “year of culture and charity”), and proposed important topics such as the children health, the human development and his interaction with the urban settings, focusing in a particular way on the rights of the child as a human being.
The main target of the Conference "Children and the Mediterranean" was to encourage a better understanding of the life conditions of the children in the Mediterranean area and to promote the exchange of knowledge, innovation policies and best practices which might support prevention, atonement or overcoming of the social risks the children are exposed to.
The Conference started with the introduction of the 2004 Mediterranean Child Map, arising from the cooperation with Censis and other qualified research institutes in the Mediterranean area. The Map presents some statistics about the condition of the Mediterranean children, together with an interpretation analysis of the details.
This report is the reference statitstical basis to determine a Wellbeing Index of the Mediterranean Child (MedChild Paper n. 1), a subject tackled by one of the workshops of the Conference.
